Free Peppol invoicing software: what to expect (and what to watch for)

You can send real Peppol invoices without a big subscription — if the free plan is genuinely compliant. Here's what a free Peppol tool must include, and the catches to avoid.

Free Peppol invoicing software: what to expect (and what to watch for)

With B2B e-invoicing becoming mandatory, a lot of small businesses and freelancers just want to send compliant invoices without paying for enterprise software. A free plan can absolutely do that — if it's the real thing and not a PDF tool wearing a Peppol badge.

What "free Peppol" must actually include

A genuinely useful free Peppol plan should:

□ Register your company as a Peppol participant
□ Send structured Peppol BIS 3.0 invoices (not just PDF export)
□ RECEIVE supplier invoices (the mandates are two-way)
□ Validate mandatory fields before sending
□ Support credit notes

If it can't send and receive structured documents over the network, it won't keep you compliant — see how to choose Peppol software.

The catches to read for

  • "Free" = PDF only. Emailing a PDF is not Peppol. Confirm structured send.
  • Send but not receive. Inbound is where free tools cut corners; you still

must accept suppliers' Peppol invoices.

  • A hard document cap. Some cap is fair on a free plan — just read the number,

and check it's not so low it's unusable.

  • Peppol behind the paywall. Some tools give you a free invoicer but lock the

Peppol send behind the top tier.

  • Watermarks or disabled emailing on the client-facing PDF.

Free vs paid: where the line usually sits

A fair model: the free plan is genuinely compliant (real send/receive, validation, credit notes) with a monthly volume cap; paid plans lift the cap and add extras (OCR, multi-user, advanced reporting). That way "free" means "starts compliant", not "starts crippled".

For freelancers specifically

If you invoice a handful of business clients a month, a compliant free plan is often all you need. See Peppol explained for freelancers and, for France, France e-invoicing for freelancers.

Where Eurobillr fits

Eurobillr's free plan is built to be compliant, not crippled: register on Peppol, send structured BIS 3.0 invoices, receive supplier invoices into an inbox, validate before sending, and issue credit notes — with a sensible monthly cap and no watermark on your PDFs. Paid plans lift the cap and add OCR, multi-user and more. Cross-border and country specifics (Belgium 0208, France 0225) are handled.
