Search "free invoicing software" and you'll get fifty results, all claiming to be free. Then you send your third invoice and hit a wall: a paywall, a watermark, a locked PDF, or an "upgrade to add VAT" banner.

The five questions that matter

Most "best free invoicing" lists compare colours and templates. Ask these instead:

□ Does the free plan produce a compliant invoice — all mandatory mentions,
  sequential numbering, correct VAT lines?
□ Can it handle more than one currency without an upgrade?
□ Can it validate an EU VAT number (VIES) before you invoice B2B?
□ Does it support structured e-invoicing / Peppol, or just PDF?
□ Are there caps that make it unusable — invoice count, watermark, no email?

If a tool fails the first one, nothing else matters. A pretty invoice that's missing a mandatory mention can be legally refused by your client.

Mandatory mentions aren't optional

Every EU country requires specific fields on an invoice: your legal identity and VAT number, the client's details, a unique sequential number, issue date, a clear description, the VAT rate and amount per rate, and the total. Miss one and the invoice can be rejected — or worse, disallowed as a deduction on the other side.
